Books I love
An old favourite
‘Marianne Moore’s Collected Poems: it took me a long time to figure out what Moore was on about and even now I’m never entirely sure, but she’s a remarkable writer for her combination of moral seriousness, playfulness and eccentricity, a real American original as Emily Dickinson was.’
A new favourite
‘Vona Groarke’s Juniper Street (Gallery Books, 2006).’
A current interest
‘Picasso, after seeing the major exhibitions in Madrid held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the return of ‘Guernica’ to Spain. I was reading Patrick O’Brian’s strange biography of the painter at the time, which is good on the work but otherwise an exercise in biographical nose-holding and very severe, in an unpleasantly complicit way, on the various unfortunate women and children strewn in the sacred monster’s wake.’
